Fixed or Dynamic IP Address - What is the difference ?

Think of a fixed IP address as the internet equivalent to your phone number. Without a fixed phone number, you would never receive any calls.  With a dynamic IP address, you would never know the location of your PC on the internet and therefore couldn't connect to it. 



The Free Solution
If your ISP only provides a Dynamic IP address (it changes each time) then you have another option. There is a service called Dynamic DNS. This is a third party service provider which logs and updates its database with your current IP address.
 
Step by Step...
1. Your router logs on to the Dynamic DNS server, updating its IP record
2. You then type in your web browser the IP address given to you by the Dynamic DNS service provider when you sign up
3. Behind the scenes, the Dynamic DNS server redirects you to your router.
4. You connect

No-IP also offer a Dynamic DNS service for free.   They support hardware from  Symantec, Sonicwall, D-Link, SMC, and Draytek
